Agra city is situated on the banks of the river Yamuna in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Agra is one of the most popular cities in India. It is loved by both Indians and foreigners who come here in large numbers to admire its beauty. Agra is synonymous with the Taj Mahal however there is a lot more to the city than this world-famous monument.
Agra is a major tourist destination because of its many splendid Mughal-era buildings, most notably the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Itimad-Ud-Daulah, Tomb of Akbar, Mehtab Bagh and Fatehpur Sikri. Three of them are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Agra is included on the Golden Triangle tourist circuit, along with Delhi and Jaipur. Agra falls within the Braj cultural region.
Famous Places in Agra
1. Taj Mahal :- The Taj Mahal is one of the modern seven wonders of the World and also the world heritage site declared by UNESCO. Taj Mahal also known as a symbol of love, built by the fifth Mughal Emperor Shahjahan in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaj Mahal in 1631 to 1653 it took 22 years for the construction with the help of 20000 workers. The Taj Mahal is a real wonder on account of symmetry, geometrical calculations and grandiose structure. The precise stone inlaying work done in the marble with semi precious stone is eye catching.
2. Agra Fort :- Agra Fort was built by Third Mughal Emperor Akbar The Great in 1565 to 1573. Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Agra, India. The fort is also known as Red Fort of Agra. The fort contains splendid palaces both in red sandstone and white marble such as :- The Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khas, The Anguri Bagh, Khas Mahal, Mina Masjid, Nagina Masjid, Moti Masjid, Musamman Burj, Jahangir Palace, Sheesh Mahal etc.
3. Itimad-Ud-Daulah :- The Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah was built by Noor Jahan(Wife of Fourth Mughal Emperor Jahangir) for her parents in 1622 to 1628. The Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah is a Mughal mausoleum in the city of Agra, India. Often described as the "Baby Taj". The tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah is often regarded as a dwarf of the Taj Mahal. The tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah is a breathtaking mausoleum situated on the bank of Yamuna River. This small mausoleum is the first example of a Mughal tomb built in white marble that employed such a wide use of stone inlay to decorate its exterior.
4. Tomb of Akbar The Great :- The Tomb of Akbar The Great is a beautifully engraved Tomb with intricate detailing. It is made of a special red-colored sand stone, which imparts a rich look to it. The Tomb of Akbar is a vast edifice, significantly representing the Emperor's broad and enriched mind. It is situated in a small town near Agra which is called Sikandra. Akbar's Tomb is one of the excellent examples of the blend of both Hindu and Muslim Architectures.
5. Fatehpur Sikri :- Fatehpur Sikri is a city built by Third Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1571 to 1585. Some of the important buildings in this city, both religious and secular are: Buland Darwaza, Jama Masjid, Tomb of Salim Chisti, Diwan-i-Aam, Diwan-i-Khas, Ibadat Khana, Anup Talao, Naubat Khana, Pachisi Court, Panch Mahal, Birbal House, Hiran Minar, Jodhabai Palace, Turkey Sultana Palace, Mariam Palace, etc.
And many other famous places such as :- Mehtab Bagh, Chini ka Rauza, Dayal Bagh, Guru Ka Taal, Jama Masjid, Mankameshwar Temple etc.
